Sail Loot Podcast 004: Turf to Surf Tasha Teaching English for Some Sailing Money

By on November 13, 2014

Tasha Hacker is one of the busiest people that I know. She and her husband, Ryan, founded and run their business/school, Teaching House. Tasha also runs her travel/adventure blog, Turf To Surf, all while taking any and every opportunity to run marathons, join rowing races from Seattle to Alaska, travel across Australia in a camper van, help win clipper round the world sailing races, traveling Southeast Asia with a home base in Thailand for a while, and take time to do a podcast interview while on a business trip in Berlin. Oh, and Tasha and Ryan just left New York City to get on their sailboat, Hideaway, in the Dominican Republic for a while. If you ever thought that you were too busy to run a business, just ask Tasha how she’s able to do it.

Tasha started teaching English as a second language for the Peace Corps in Russia. She met Ryan in Qatar and they got married in Spain. That’s where Ryan told Tasha that he wanted to sail around the world, and she thought he was crazy. Eventually the were back in NY. Tasha got her masters degree, they opened a school together, and they started learning to sail. The school, Teaching House, ended up providing the sailing money that they needed to cruise the world.

From New York, they sailed their boat, Hideaway, to the Dominican Republic. They left the Dominican Republic a little over a year ago to join the Clipper Round the World race for two legs of the 2013-2014 race, drove across Australia, spent some time in Thailand, went back to New York for a few months to work on Teaching House, and just got back to the Dominican Republic a few days ago.

I’d love to tell you all about it, but instead, you should just listen to Tasha!
