Sail Loot Podcast 036: Captain Louis Hoock Sails Alaska
Captain Hoock is a captain and crew of S/V Arcturus, he is the founder of Alaska Adventure Sailing and Coastal Footprint, and he once sailed the Jolly Roger. He’s got a few stories to tell about sailing from Alaska to Panama, environmental stewardship, whale watching, and Alaska sailing adventures.
Louis Hoock was getting his Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science with a certificate in Outdoor Skills and Leadership at University of Alaska Southeast when he decided that he didn’t want to live in a normal dorm room like everybody else. He wanted to live on the water, and that’s when he found the Jolly Roger. The Jolly Roger needed some work, but Captain Hoock had some time to fix her up. After all, he didn’t have any idea how to sail yet and he had to finish school before he took off on an adventure for the environment.
Captain Hoock is an inspiration to us all. He found some money to go sailing and help the environment by trawling for micr0-plastics and cleaning up beaches along his travels. He has since captained a NOAA ship, ran a whale watching boat, and started his own business taking adventurers to otherwise unreachable destinations. Do you want to go sailing on an Alaska Adventure?
