Sail Loot Podcast 038: Linus Wilson Sailing Part Time to Keep Making Money by Teaching Money

By on May 20, 2016

Linus Wilson has found a way to sail around the world even though his wife, Janna, absolutely, positively will not sail on an open ocean passage with him and he has a 5.5 year old daughter.

He’s also found a way to keep his job as a Finance Professor. A job in the teaching profession is fantastic because teachers usually get 3 to 4 months off from work in the summer months without having to ask for more vacation time, or taking 4-6 years to save up and roll-over unused vacation time. The only issue is that those months are normally right at the start of hurricane season. Those months aren’t, however, during the typhoon and tropical cyclone season of the Southern Hemisphere.

Linus only started sailing about 5.5 years ago, but the Wilsons are already on their second sailboat, Contango. He’s got boat loads of experience re-outfitting sailboats because he’s already spent the time, and money, getting both of his sailboats into live-able, cruising shape.

He’s slowly made a few passages across the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf Stream. Janna and his daughter, Sophie, met up with him after those passages to experience the island hopping portions of the trip. Sailing Contango across the open oceans with a crew member or two that he finds via the wonderful world-wide-web, and meeting Janna and Sophie for the island hopping adventures of the voyage, is the recipe that Linus has for How to Sail Around the World Part Time.

I was lucky enough to catch up with Linus before he sets sail for Panama this summer. He’s got lot’s of great advice about outfitting sailboats, taking some time to become comfortable with a sailboat before just heading out into the middle of the great blue ocean, weather patterns, and, of course, the financial aspects of sailing around the world.
